Operators can consistently deliver improved HD video quality to set-top boxes connected to low-bandwidth DSL lines, and also deliver video services to mobile devices on 3G/4G networks (without exceeding 1.5 Mbps bandwidth constraints) thanks to the new EyeQ packaging solution from Harmonic, which was unveiled at NAB Show. EyeQ leverages the human visual system to reduce OTT video bit rate requirements by up to 50 per cent without impacting video quality, Harmonic claims.
“Operators can employ this capability to deliver higher-resolution video streams that can be enjoyed on any device with vastly reduced buffering – even over constrained OTT-ABR networks,” the vendor says.
EyeQ relies on algorithms that use a better understanding of human visual perception to remove data that makes no impact on how we see television. It is viewed as a way to deliver HEVC-type compression efficiency improvements without relying on HEVC.
