freenet TV connect, Germany’s new hybrid broadcast broadband service, uses Divitel headend and Keepixo encoders

Keepixo has provided the encoders for a Divitel-designed headend that is now powering the IP streaming that forms part of the freenet TV connect service, a hybrid broadcast broadband offer in Germany that complements the freenet TV terrestrial TV bouquet of private broadcaster channels. Freenet, which delivers HD programming over DVB-T2, and freenet TV connect, which extends the proposition to include IP-delivered services, are both provided by MEDIA BROADCAST, the German transmission network and broadcast services provider.

The Keepixo encoders-packagers ensure maximum video quality for any given end-user bandwidth, covering 18 IP channels initially. The system, which provides MPEG-DASH adaptive bit rate (ABR) streaming, has been designed to scale easily. Extra channels can be added without system-wide resets.

Sven Eckoldt, Senior Product Manager at MEDIA BROADCAST GmbH,  comments: “Our new freenet TV connect is built to surpass viewer expectations. Divitel’s expertise on video delivery solutions and Keepixo’s products allow us to provide viewers with additional channels, enabling more exciting content and relevant usage scenarios. We feel that freenet TV marks a new era for terrestrial television, combining the strengths of both broadcast and IP-based services.”

“freenet TV connect is the type of project where Divitel shines,” comments Wouter Slot, COO at Divitel. “We delivered a flexible, future-proof solution. Keepixo has proven a reliable and versatile partner in previous projects and they were a natural fit for the freenet TV connect solution. We look forward to seeing end-users flock to the freenet TV service and enjoy it in new and exciting ways.”
