Compression specialist ATEME used NAB Show this week to showcase a production-ready AV1 codec in its TITAN video delivery solution. AV1 is enabled via a simple software upgrade and can be used alongside HEVC, H.264 and/or MPEG-2 in a converged encoding platform. “We expect AV1 customer deployments to start in Q2 and to go into production later this year,” Michel Artières, CEO of ATEME, revealed.
ATEME is therefore giving customers the option of a royalty free codec. AV1 was developed by the Alliance for Open Media to give the market the potential to avoid codec royalty fees. The company says high-quality AV1 video also enables significant CDN savings.
