Hulu’s total customer base now stands at 28 million – 26.8 million monthly paid subscribers and 1.3 million promotional accounts – according to company stats.
The US streaming service revealed the figure at its Hulu ‘19 Presentation event in New York, where it also announced new series orders and details of a new ad offering.
Hulu described its new ‘binge advertising experience’ as a non-intrusive format that will let advertisers target viewers with ads that are “situationally relevant to their viewing behaviour”.
It is the company’s second ‘situational advertising solution,’ after its pause ad experience, which Hulu plans to roll out more widely from August. This format shows an ad when you pause a show.
Among the new shows announced by the company were two new live-action Marvel series, Marvel’s Ghost Rider and Marvel’s Helstrom, which are both slated to debut on Hulu in 2020.
Actress and producer Nicole Kidman and producer Bruna Papandrea will also adapt author Liane Moriarty’s latest book, Nine Perfect Strangers, for Hulu via their respective production companies, Blossom Films and Made Up Stories.
In addition, Hulu will partner with Vox Media Studios, David Chang’s Majordomo Media, and Chrissy Teigen’s Suit & Thai Productions to develop and produce a slate of food programming for the platform.
“In today’s direct-to-consumer world, viewers are demanding better when it comes to TV – from the user experience to their content choices to the advertising,” said Hulu CEO Randy Freer.
“Hulu’s continued growth, as well as the shows and initiatives announced today, reflect our deep investment in product, programming, brand, customer experience and business strategy to ensure that with Hulu, consumers can connect with the stories they love, at the right time and price, on any device.”
