Farncombe boosts Android-based TV app development capacity

In a move designed to address the emergence of the Android OS as an increasingly popular application platform for embedded TV devices such as set-top boxes, Farncombe, the digital TV consultancy and services company, has increased its capacity to develop interactive TV applications for the Android OS environment. The company’s enhanced competencies in this area are the result of a long-running project within its WeAreAka design practice to create a new software framework allowing the rapid development and prototyping of Android-based applications.

“For operators and broadcasters the Android platforms create new opportunities,” said Jean-Marc Racine, the Managing Partner who heads up Farncombe’s French office. “The news that Adobe plans to stop development of Flash Player for TV devices means operators will be looking for application environments with the necessary scale to allow for low-cost delivery of over-the-top services. We can support them through the selection process and once they have made their choice we can offer application development and test skills across the entire range of available platforms, from traditional middleware such as OpenTV and MediaHighway to emergent TV technologies such as HbbTV and Android.”
