Mike Fries: Nobody will need Netflix when we are done

Mike Fries, President and CEO of Liberty Global, had a warning for Netflix last week when he told Bloomberg: “Nobody is going to get their OTT services from Netflix when we’re done.” He was referring to how the cable industry has stepped up its game, and how Liberty Global has taken onboard the lessons that companies like Netflix provided, namely that consumers want access to their content on multiple devices with better user interfaces.

Fries was speaking at the World Economic Forum meeting at Davos in Switzerland, where UPC Cablecom, part of Liberty Global, has just launched the Horizon next-generation cable platform. He claims cable can provide all the content consumers want but for $8 per month Netflix cannot afford to match that. He noted that in the Netherlands (where the Horizon platform is also deployed with UPC Netherlands), you can watch 80 channels of linear TV on the Apple iPad.
