iWedia software is being used to operate the new Android IPTV set-top box that has been introduced to coincide with the new Swisscom TV 2.0 service. The device uses iWedia’s Teatro-3.5 software solution, which is designed to support managed IPTV and OTT services with advanced Java user interfaces. To cover content security, Teatro-3.5 is integrated with the Verimatrix VCAS for IPTV Conditional Access System and VCAS for Internet TV, plus Microsoft PlayReady DRM.
The Swisscom TV 2.0 box gives access to 250+ TV channels (of which 80+ are in HD), over 6,400 videos on demand (in German, French and Italian) and more than 5,000 live sport events per year. It provides a seven-day catch-up service on almost all channels. The STB gives access to the Swisscom network PVR service (now extended to STBs as well as multiscreen devices) and a local time-shift buffer supports pausing and resuming of live TV. There is also an app store with 50+ Android apps.
“We are delighted that Swisscom has chosen our software solution to operate its TV 2.0 Android box and manage its first screen offering,†declares Nikola Teslić, CTO of iWedia.
“With this deployment, Swisscom becomes one of the first digital TV operators worldwide to leverage Android openness and flexibility.
“Our vision of Android becoming a pre-eminent environment for digital TV devices, like it is on mobile, is turning to reality. There is an irresistible traction in the market where more and more digital TV device manufacturers, as well as digital TV service providers, want to adopt Android as their environment of choice. The main reason is to benefit from the existing Android ecosystem.
“Based on our track record of success in extending Android for digital TV, we are now in an ideal position to propose mature and field-proven software products to this growing market.â€
