Sky Italia, in cooperation with Telecom Italia, is deploying a broadband HD decoder powered by Frog By Wyplay, the open source middleware, to enable the full Sky TV service to be streamed using Apple HLS adaptive bit rate video to Telecom Italia homes over the telco’s ‘ultra-broadband’ network. As a result, Sky Italia will be able to reach non-satellite homes and potentially drive growth for its Pay TV offer.
As you can read elsewhere, this is a notable deployment because of the way an entire satellite Pay TV service, including HD content, is being offered as Internet video (not traditional IPTV) via a telco partnership. Hundreds of live channels will be streamed to the Sky branded set-top boxes in Telecom Italia homes.
Wyplay has provided the Frog Client software solution for the Sky HD decoders. “During the development project, Frog Client’s HTML5 user interface provided easy development and rapid customization to meet demanding deadlines and now enables Sky Italia’s other technology partners to develop and integrate interactive applications,†Wyplay reveals.
Wyplay also supplied its Frog back-end software solution, described as a new generation of hybrid service platform for ‘IPTV’ and broadcast operators. Among other features, this solution manages the EPG and the hybrid OTT/terrestrial channel line-up, while it also provides STB device management.
“Thanks to our strategic collaboration, we have been able to deliver and deploy this project in less than 10 months,†says Jacques Bourgninaud, CEO at Wyplay. “The project was also the opportunity to integrate with Sky’s conditional access system powered by Cisco. As a result, Frog By Wyplay has now been integrated in field deployments with all the major CAS solutions on the marketâ€.
