SingTel is providing an early example of how a communications company can monetize ‘premium Wi-Fi’ as well as make wireless home networking a service differentiator. The company has started to offer customers the option for better Wi-Fi at $10 per month, harnessing mesh Wi-Fi and client steering technology from AirTies that was first field-trialled last June.

As SingTel tells its customers: “Wi-Fi Mesh ensures consistent video streaming from any part of your home. Ensure complete home Wi-Fi coverage without the need for wiring. Unlike Wi-Fi range extenders or boosters, the smart Wi-Fi Mesh technology enables the devices to ‘talk’ to one another to select the best wireless transmission path for your device from any corner of your home. With band steering capabilities, it switches your device to the optimum band (2.4GHz/5GHz) whenever you move from one room to another, to ensure seamless wireless surfing.

“Wi-Fi Mesh can be easily connected to a Singtel-issued router to extend Wi-Fi coverage in your home. Depending on your home layout and size, you can choose the number of Wi-Fi Mesh devices you need at home.”

The company suggests that in a typical 4-5 room condominium you will need two of its Wi-Fi mesh devices (which have the AirTies technology onboard). This package costs $10 per month on a 24-month contract. Larger multi-storey properties need three or more devices, with each device beyond the initial pair costing another $5 per month.
