The go-to-market target for standards-based 5G services has been moved forward by a year, with an expectation that chipsets and handsets will be available by 2019, making the recent ‘What 5G means for media’ conference session at IBC all the more relevant. Here, Simon Frost, Head of Marketing & Business Development for EMEA at AWS Elemental, reveals the take-aways from that session (which he chaired), including the potential for 5G to become a last mile access technology for high-bandwidth video into homes and for low-latency applications like newsgathering and sports coverage (e.g. remote sensors in F1 cars). He also explains the role of the cloud in enabling 5G-based video service delivery.
